Shaking table tests of a resilient bridge system with precast reinforced concrete columns equipped with springs

This paper presents the shake table test results of a novel system for design precast reinforced concrete bridges. The specimen comprises slab and four columns. connections are dry columns connected to by an ungrouted tendon. One tendon ends is anchored above slab, in series with stack washer springs, while other end at bottom column. addition such flexible restraining increases stability system, keeping it relatively allowing experience negative post-uplift stiffness. It form seismic isolation. Anchoring within column, caps moment foundation, reduces its size. hundred eighty-one tests were performed. first 180 caused negligible damage specimen, mainly abrasion perimeter column top ends. Hence, proved resilient. 181st excitation collapse, because tendons unexpectedly failed load less than 50% their capacity (provided manufacturer), due failure socket. highlights importance properly designing tendons. used statistically validate rigid body model. model performed reasonably well never underestimating median displacement response center mass more 30%. However, cannot predict torsion rotation that was observed imperfections.
